Frequently Asked Questions

Where is The Gardens at Cheshire located?
We are located in the Cheshire Connecticut. Approximately 2 1/2 hours from NYC and Boston, near the center of the state.

Does The Gardens at Cheshire pick up and deliver?
The Gardens at Cheshire will pickup and deliver your plants. Trucking fees vary from $25 -$100 depending on distance from Norfolk and number of plants stored.

What care is provided during the storage season?
The storage charge includes all the appropriate and necessary care your plants require including watering, pruning, regular grooming, fertilization and insect & disease management. In addition to the basics covered under the cost of storage, some plants require additional attention such as root pruning, extensive or creative top pruning, restaking or trellis repair. These special procedures have an additional cost. Please refer to our price schedule.

What's Broadfield Garden's territory?
The Gardens at Cheshire services all of CT, MA, and NY State east of the Hudson River and South of Albany and Long Island.

What is the storage cost?
Please refer to our price schedule.

Do you accept all containers?
We prefer 'plastic' containers because they're light- weight and when they do crack and break they're inexpensive and easy to replace. But we absolutely encourage you to mature your plants in 'clay' as the container contributes significantly to your plants presentation. We take every precaution when handling your expensive containers and replace any container broken due to our neglect.

What is the storage season?
Our storage season runs from Sept. 1st to June 1st.

What are the most popular plants stored?
Agapanthus by a far margin. Jasmine, Hibiscus, Fuchsia and Rosemary. Agapanthus are the perfect plant to store because they thrive in a root-bound condition and are much more valuable then their storage cost.

What size plants are customarily stored?
Our greenhouses accommodate plants up to 14' high. Plant width is not a problem.

What plants over-winter well?
An incredible number of commonly grown garden plants can be saved for a number of years. We've over-wintered 150+ different plant species during the past four years. Zone 6-12 plants can be successfully over-wintered in a cold dry greenhouse. Tropical plants are stored in a warmer greenhouse.

Where were your plants stored last year?
I regularly ask new clients where they over-wintered their plants the year before. They're generally embarrassed as they describe the
scenario they subjected their plants to in previous years. Most clients have had disappointing results as they've tried to store plants in their unheated sun porch or that particularly sunny spot in their basement. Or perhaps even worse in an ex-best friends greenhouse.

What are the storage conditions?
Plants are stored in double poly greenhouses equipped with appropriate mechanical equipment to properly heat, cool and humidify the plants environment. We have an automatic propane powered generator and additional backup propane heaters to ensure uninterrupted environmental conditions. House temperatures (or more accurately night temperatures) are usually 40, 50 or 60 degrees. Tropicals are stored in a 60-degree night temperature house, while zone 7-10 plants in 40 or 50 degree houses.
